Harriet Reaching for the North Star is a colored pencil work that served as preliminary planning for a glass etching. The aim of the work was to inspire worship. In this composition I had imagined Harriet as reaching upward in the midst of climbing a tree scouting out her path for leading people to freedom. I sought to express that she has a clear view of the north star, as it is well known the winter months were the most favorable for the underground railroad conductor. Her courage and strength in God is symbolized both in her hand reaching upward and the directional line coming from her eye also emphasizing her gaze to the heavens.
