When the Episcopal church leadership, in August 2019, called for the simultaneous ringing of church bells in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans arriving in the Virginia colonies in 1619, I was inspired to create a landscape highlighting St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Della Maryland. The church sits on the Monocacy River in Frederick county in a region that once held large slave plantations. In the pastel On the Occasion of the 400th Anniversary of Slavery the rendering of the church bell tower and its surrounding landscape enabled me to pay tribute to the 110 year old church as a symbol of resilience.
